Cleaning the cesspit. How does it work?

A cesspit is more or less the predecessor of the septic tank and the IBA. A cesspit must be emptied and cleaned regularly. This should always be carried out by a specialised company! Hazardous gases can accumulate in a cesspit, which can be very dangerous if you enter the cesspit. If you neglect the maintenance of the cesspit, the likelihood of blockages and odours, such as sewer odours in your home, increases.

Cleaning a cesspool removes the layer of sludge that accumulates at the bottom of the cesspool and vacuums out any floating layers. It is important that most of the sludge is removed from the tank, the larger this layer of sludge is, the faster the water will become polluted again. The bacteria in the sump already take care of the decomposition of the waste products, but when the sludge layer builds up, the bacteria can no longer carry out the decomposition sufficiently. The balance is lost. The cesspit can also cause a major odour nuisance.

Also be careful with strong bactericidal products such as chlorine and bleach. These ensure that the bacteria in the cesspit can no longer do their work. Problems with the cesspit will occur much sooner.

There are various products for a cesspit that you can use to add extra bacteria. This increases the number of bacteria that can break down the sludge in the cesspit. This can restore the balance and prevent odours. It also reduces the frequency of emptying. Please note that this is not a permanent solution. To remove the sludge layer, it is still important to have the cesspit emptied and cleaned regularly.
