Street drain smells. What can be done?

The stench from the street drain is annoying. Fortunately, the solution is simple.

A street drain near your house, garden or pub is causing odour nuisance. It could also be that a drain in your garden is stinking.

What is the cause?

All kinds of organic and inorganic material are flushed down a street drain. Fallen leaves, dust, sand, etc. This collects in the gully and rots. This can happen particularly quickly in warm weather. You can then smell rotten eggs, for example. You can smell this even at very low concentrations and it can be quite unpleasant. This gas, called hydrogen sulphide (H2S), is also potentially harmful to health at high concentrations. 

Is there a solution if the street drain stinks?

  1. Shake the bottle well.
  2. Empty the bottle into the street drain 
  3. Fill the empty bottle with lukewarm water and pour it in.
  4. Repeat the process if necessary.
